How to Start Claiming Your Benefits

You don't need a free weekend or a filing cabinet — just this little sequence. One step at a time, each one small enough to finish with your morning coffee.

The Six Steps

Do them in order, or cherry-pick — every single one stands on its own.

1

Call your insurer. Ask one magic question: "Which discounts does my home qualify for?" Mention your detectors, security devices, roof age, and whether you'd bundle home and auto. Write down what they say.

2

Check your utility's rebate page. Search your electric or gas utility's name plus "rebates." Skim for thermostats, insulation, and appliances — and note the offers that match upgrades you were already considering.

3

Start a records folder. One folder — paper or digital — for receipts, warranties, inspection reports, and upgrade photos. Future-you will love it at rebate time, claim time, and resale time.

4

Do a 15-minute safety walk. Test every smoke and CO detector, note any over 10 years old, and check for obvious drafts around doors and windows. Each fix is a comfort win and often a discount too.

5

Look into assistance programs. If your household might qualify, ask your state energy office or utility about weatherization and bill-assistance programs — and check what repair help your city or county offers.

6

Set a yearly reminder. Discounts, rebates, and programs change. One calendar reminder to redo steps 1 and 2 each year keeps the benefits flowing without any ongoing effort.

Before You Call

Have your policy number handy plus a rough idea of your roof's age and the safety devices you own. The call goes twice as fast.
Ask before you buy. Many rebates require pre-approval or specific models, so check the offer's fine print before purchasing an upgrade.
Get it in writing. When a discount is applied or a rebate approved, ask for confirmation by email — and drop it straight into your records folder.
